Chapter Fourteen

It was another ten minutes before they finally spotted the Admiral heading up the cobbled street towards them and by the time he caught up with them he was red faced and breathless.

Mabel eyed him with concern until eventually he pointed towards the Red Lion and managed to wheeze out the word, ‘Pint.’

‘It’s only half past eleven,’ said Mabel disapprovingly.

‘Sun’s over the yardarm somewhere in the world,’ puffed the Admiral, ‘and after the bloody exercise I’ve had this morning, they’ll be lucky I don’t ask for a straw.’ He turned and staggered towards the pub, Pickles in tow without waiting to see if the others followed.

The inside was predictably cosy and warm and Emily and Mabel wasted no time in warming their hands by the roaring fire. ‘I thought we were supposed to be questioning Connie Baxter,’ said Mabel once they were all seated.

‘I think it’s more important we’re all updated with recent events,’ responded Jimmy. A lot seems to have happened this morning and I’m beginning to feel as though we’re missing something vital.’

‘We can still go and interrogate our landlady after we’ve finished here,’ suggested the Admiral, clearly a little more the ticket after a few sips of his beer.

‘What did Willy have to say for himself after I left?’ Jimmy asked.

Charles Shackleford snorted. ‘Very little. He didn’t seem able to give any reason as to why the Codfather couldn’t put to sea, and as a boat owner, he should be able to come up with a dozen convincing porkies. All very bloody strange. Any sailor should have a working knowledge of his vessel’s mechanics at the very least and I got the impression Willy's a pretty old sea dog.’ The Admiral frowned. ‘It was like he’d just forgotten.’

‘It might be stress or simple anxiety,’ suggested Jimmy. ‘He seemed pretty upset and anxious when he was talking to Kathy Brummel.’

‘Kathy who?’ the Admiral asked with a frown. Realising they were getting ahead of themselves; Jimmy took the next fifteen minutes to bring everybody up to speed with the morning’s developments.

‘So, there’s clearly something fishy going on,’ Jimmy finished, ‘but the bottom line is we haven’t got a bloody clue what.’

‘And we’ve only got three more days to find out,’ added Emily.

‘Well, whatever happened to Jenny or her mother, it doesn’t look as though Willy Welbeck is the cold hearted killer we thought him to be.’

‘But we’re obviously not the only ones who’ve been thinking it,’ Jimmy murmured remembering their elderly mole of the day before, not to mention Mack’s words when he first dropped them off.

‘Well Jenny’s friend Karen definitely thought he was capable of murder,’ Emily said, adding to the list.

The Admiral sighed. ‘I wonder if that old timer we spoke to yesterday will be in this lunchtime?’

‘I’m not sure he’d have anything more useful to tell us anyway Sir,’ Jimmy said.

‘Bloody good job now I think about it, given how much it’s cost me so far.’

‘Let’s just go over what we know,’ Jimmy suggested, taking a deep breath.
